The past month has been a jam-packed, exciting and exhausting month for the family. The highlight of the last month was Charlotte’s commencement at Kids and Co preschool. Her teachers have been awaiting Charlotte’s arrival, with excitement and anticipation. I am sure not many kids start preschool with a seizure management plan, shunt management plan and a list of ‘things to watch out for’ from their Mum! But, needless to say, they have been tremendous with Charlotte who they have followed through her long and difficult treatment.

After attending one day at preschool on her first week, she then followed with two days the following week, and has not looked back! She loves to draw and do craft which was not the case three or four months ago. Maintaining concentration for any period of time was best aligned to that of a gold fish!  I have wanted to cry every time I have thought about where Charlotte is at the moment. She has made great progress with her behaviour, motor skills and adjustment to life outside Sydney Children’s. While we still have a long way to go with sleep and medications, we are just delighted and truly relieved.

We have been fortunate enough to work with the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation to assist in raising money and awareness for the hospital through numerous Gold Week fundraisers. Out final activity was the live Telethon on channel 9 which raised over $ 1 600 000. Rod and I would like to thank Lisa Wilkinson for her warmth with Charlotte and making Rod and I feel so comfortable on live television. We would like to thank our family and friends for their encouragement of our work with the Foundation and for their continued support of our family. How fortunate we are!

I did underestimate how emotional and exhausting speaking about and reliving Charlotte’s treatment would be. Perhaps, this has been a very important part of our emotional journey following a really difficult experience. At the end of the day, we thank Charlotte’s medical team, nurses, specialist staff and volunteers at Sydney Children’s for leading us, supporting us and assisting Charlotte through a medical journey that no child should have to endure.

Happy long weekend,

Beck and Rod xoxo
